Introdução: Estudos recentes destacaram um aumento significativo no uso de cigarros eletrônicos em todo o mundo, particularmente entre jovens adultos. Esta revisão narrativa aborda os tópicos importantes relacionados aos cigarros eletrônicos que devem ser introduzidos aos profissionais de odontologia. Objetivo: Revisar o que se sabe sobre os cigarros eletrônicos, o impacto na saúde humana e no meio ambiente e sugerir a incorporação dessas informações no currículo das faculdades de odontologia. Desenho do estudo: A literatura disponível foi identificada por meio de buscas no Medline/PubMed, SCOPUS, EMBASE, listas de referências e livros e foi revisada. Informações significativas foram coletadas e analisadas. Resultados: A revisão mostrou que os cigarros eletrônicos estão sendo usados por jovens que nunca fumaram e que o dispositivo pode não ser uma forma eficaz de cessação do tabaco. Além disso, revelou o impacto do dispositivo na saúde humana e na cavidade oral, além do ambiente. Sugeriu a necessidade de incorporar essas informações nos protuários dos pacientes na clínica odontológica. Conclusão: Nossos achados sugerem que é necessário educar os estudantes de odontologia sobre como obter o histórico de pacientes que usam cigarros eletrônicos e como aconselhar seus pacientes.
